A story of how a man who cannot control his below-the-belt cost him his job, self-respect, and life.
The African movie industry
ably led by Nollywood has over the years mastered the art of pressing a
message through its screenplay and written words acted as films. The message in
their respective plays can go as far as speaking against social vices like
cultism, rituals, and armed robbery. They can as well send a message of hope, God
answering prayers even taking a swipe at the Government.
One such film that has caught the attention of the people in
recent times is a film produced by Femi Adebayo titled ‘Jagun Jagun’ where the
message of “Going easy with the use of power” and on a personal note “Being
careful with women” – they are weaker vessel and can be pushed by a simple
matter to reveal the secret of a man.
The film Underbelly, was a depiction of many things, ranging from the realities of the 2023 General elections to handling women, greed, lust, and in a nutshell the truth between the characteristics of the ethnic system in Nigeria, and how each one behaves towards another.
It all began when two ‘strangers’- Femi Adebayo (Ojo) and
Smart Conrad (Afang -Not the soup) were employed to go work in a Leather
company in what seems like Kano, Northern Nigeria through an advertorial. They
got there with enthusiasm with the duo seeing differently the need for work.
One was working to gather money so as to participate in the FESTAC festival in
Lagos, while the other just needed a job to live and let’s live.

Their coming was seen by UBALE the camp herbalist as a
change in the old system of things, as one man has always been the one at the
helm of affairs of the company. The two began their job, dutifully, although
Afang has a penchant for women, while Ojo too has a controlled affection for
women. They got a house paid for by Ojo, with the best beneficiary being Afang.
There was a bar in which the workers went to relax after each day of work, drinking wine and alcohol. Truly, any location in
Nigeria where you cannot find an Igbo man dealing in business, such place is
not a good to stay. The businessman selling the beverages was an Igbo man named
Ochigbo who has a staff named Uche, and a sister named Munachi. Afang eyes other
people's wives and girlfriends, vis-à-vis the girls eyeing the new cat.
On her birthday, Afang got laid by Munachi in an arranged
setting by Kato. He went on getting laid by Mr. Silas's wife, who happens to be
close to the strangers, Little did Mr. Silas know that the insect eating his vegetable was right there under the vegetable. Afang went on to seduce his supervisor’s
girlfriend named Halima, and you know in that part of the world Hausa men
don’t joke with their wives or anyone they are sexually attracted to, it is a
matter of pride and power. This is where he head butt the bee hive; he got laid
by Halima in a very dark corner serving him a quickie, a touch-your-toe
scenario, she ambushed Afang on his way home from the bar.
In all this, he has started getting queried by his
supervisor, with Ojo his friend defending him all the way, but Afang seems to
be carried away by the sweet savor of quickies by sex-starved girls at the
camp.
PART 2
Afang has gotten details of the camp old boys transacting in the illegal business of drugs, transported and distributed by
Ochigbo to the ‘East of the South’. This can display a point that people
peddling drugs in Nigeria are mostly people from the ‘Eat of the South’. He
relays this secret to Ojo, who is a Yoruba man who does not like people cheating
others. Ojo went on revealing the secret in part to the company head who took a
very great regard for him and went on calling him a ‘good man’.
Munachi got pregnant from the engagement with Afang, he
could not tell his brother about it, and she committed suicide. Upon Ochigbo's
return he could not fathom why Munachi would just end her life, Ochigbo took
revenge for the death of her beloved girl called sister.

Afang went on to get ‘laid in half’ by Ojo’s girlfriend
in Ojo’s room, he was giving Sophia a head when he was caught in the act by Ojo
since he forgot to lock the door, Ojo was bitter and sent Afang packing from
his house. Afang was killed that night, Ojo saw him lying fallow when he was
returning from the bar on a first-of-his-kind visit. Ochigbo killed the people
he believed could not help oversee his business while he was helping them
transact theirs.
Ojo trailed the secret in the illegal business, put the
warehouse on fire, and collapsed the business. This angered the company head. Ojo
will be the next to be silenced, he got saved by fate by a traveler after being
stabbed many times.
Ojo returned to the camp to enthrone a new order.
I give the film 94/100 for the screenplay, and directing,
even the storyline. I recommend good film lovers take the time to watch it on
their respective means of seeing Nollywood movies.
