BREAKING: 16 Nigerian Military Officers to Face Trial as AFN Concludes Coup Plot Investigation

The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has concluded investigations into the disciplinary cases involving sixteen officers arrested over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.

It will be recalled that the Defence Headquarters, in October 2025, announced the arrest of the officers following allegations of misconduct. In a fresh update released on Monday, the AFN confirmed that the investigations have been completed and the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations.

According to the military, the investigation process was extensive and conducted strictly in accordance with established military procedures, with all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel carefully examined.

Findings from the probe revealed that a number of the officers are facing allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, an action described as incompatible with the ethics, values, and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Following the outcome of the investigation, officers found to have cases to answer will be formally arraigned before the appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in line with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations. The AFN noted that this step is aimed at ensuring accountability while upholding fairness and due process.

The Armed Forces stressed that the measures being taken are purely disciplinary and part of its internal institutional mechanisms to maintain order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the ranks.

Reaffirming its stance, the AFN stated that it remains resolute in upholding the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority.

The statement was signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director, Defence Information, and dated 26 January 2026.
