Presenting awards to students
The journey
It is a joyful thing going for National Youth Service Corps NYSC, because it serves as template and the best way to actively serve one's Nation. It is indeed without beating around the bush a service to humanity for the sanity and unity which is Paramount for nation building.
The NYSC scheme was created in a bid to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil war which took place from 6 July 1967- January 1970. The unfortunate antecedents in our national history gave impetus to the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps by decree No.24 of 22nd May 1973, which stated that the NYSC is being established "with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity".
Aside the reasons stated above, the NYSC also serve as a means of showcasing ones talents acquired in period spent in school
and is a preparatory ground that ushered one into the labour market which some called favour market; for it is generally believed that,'knowledge that can't be communicated is knowledge not properly achieved'.
I have patiently looked forward to the day I will wear the khaki, be away from my State, not because of having phobia for my home but to taste the happiness derived from Serving one's nation. The day seemed too long but finally...it arrived.
These words were written in respect of my Mandatory NYSC experience.
The Posting
The long awaited dream was realized and achieved; when i was posted to Ogun sometimes around October 2018 for Batch C stream1. It was a different experience as it can be liken to the actor, Christian in The Pilgrim progress.
I started with a trumpet call by the soldiers in camp, through to mixed faces, in colour, attitude, race, preference and life. One thing I can't forget was the early morning call, the saed, and the Parade. On this I say thanks to the Men of the Nigerian army for training the Youth for mental and physical fitness.
Team work
The Challenge
While in the camp, there was a controversial debate and sentiments about the superiority/dichotomy between University and Polytechnics Students. As we all know that it is the norm of graduands from any institution to always try to convince others to agree that their Own Institution is the best, even when majority are only hiding under the umbrella and guise of institutions with nothing or less to offer.
What should be held in high esteem is what each Students are impregnated with, not the institution of Learning. The Nigeria System is not heping, reason been that employer of Labour prefer to employ Applicants base on institution not quality of knowlege. Hence, given the rise to mediocrity and the employment of half baked graduates, all in the name of Institutional hierarchy.
As a product of the latter, I debated with other students from hyped institution of learning within and outside the Country. After relentlessly advocating for my own cause, beliefs, and ideas as fate will have it I won the inter platoon debate competition.
The debate which was centered on "The role of Nigeria youth in saving the World from Global warming" I was very elated and dumbfounded, Thanks to the system I was raised from,One time best State Polytechnic in Nigeria, i am talking about Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Formely called Ondo State Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo state.
The Duty
As time went on, I was made a Corpers Liaison Officer, CLO. This perhaps is the peak of any Corp member to attain in the National Youth Service Corp Scheme. As a member of the CLO, I engaged in constructive relationship and Programme adgudged second to none.
I organized an inter school quiz competition with the sole purpose of examining the level of education in Ogun State waterside, and the state respectively, believing that "where a problem is detected,we can work towards solving it;hence, making a change".
The Book
To this end, in supporting this vision; The book ''AN ASSESSMENT ON THE ROOT CAUSES OF EDUCATIONAL DECLINE IN OGUN STATE WATERSIDE L.G.A, OGUN STATE. was written by My team and I.
This achievement is sustaining and also first among all. To crown the effort and make the success a sound one to be remembered for a long time and to show appreciation for this onerous display in the accomplishment of this haculean task, the Government of Ogunstate has recieved the book from me, so as to applaud such a great feat, well achieved, in a well deserved manner.
Conclusion
To bring this short jot to an end, you will be wondering who the writer is I purposely suspended the introductory part of me, because I am controlled with the zeal of 'Us', not of 'Me', To this end, I deem it fit to tell you the hand behind this wonderful piece and the face behind the mask; I go by the name Atsuwete Toristeju Oluwasegun, one time Chairman of Faculty President in Rufus Giwa Polytechnic,Owo,Ondo state, contesting for the Vice President, Niger Delta Student Union Government. On this note I commit us into the hands of the Most-High, to guide and watch over us through our stay on this planet 'Earth'.
God bless Ogun State,
God bless Nigeria
In whole, Thanks for reading through, there is still a thousand sea to be crossed, hurdles to be jumped and medals to be won,as we move forward with the hope of writing our name in the sand of time, along memory lane.
Sincerely,
Atsuwete Toristeju Oluwasegun
